Shark Blanket - Knit edition

Hi everyone, So I have to admit I have tried to learn to crochet but there is just something about the postion of holding the at working yarn that I can not get a great tension and I get frustrated and I have learned that my yarn work is now done with 2 needles :)

So needless to say I have come across many patterns that I love that are done in crochet and am getting better with invisioning my project in knitting lingo. Of course when the shark blanket appeared everyone need to have one but its crocheted.

Here goes my attempt at a knit version and I hope you enjoy.  This pattern is made for an average adult size.

Switch to US 11 Circular needles and Knit 3 rows and then time to start the tail.

Next Round - K17; place last 11 stitches worked on small stitch holder. First half of tail will be worked back and forth over remaining 11 stitches on needles (last 5 stitches of current round and first 6 stitches of next round).
Row 1 - (K1, kfb) 5 times, k1. 16 stitches.

Row 51 - K1 K2tog, SSK, K1
Row 53 - K1, K2tog, K1
Row 54 - K1, K2tog
Row - 55 Bind off.  Leave your self a long tail and fold this piece in half with outer edges together and seam together. This is one half of the tail.

Replace held stitches on needle and rejoin yarn with RS facing. Work Rows 1-55 as for first half of tail.

Once both halves of tail are complete I made it more of a fin by sewing down the middle of the two to join them together about 1/3 of the way.

Using US Circular needles size 11 and the white yarn, I picked up stitches along the open edges of the body one side at a time and simply did 5 rows of garter stitch to make the appearance of the belly.

Along the edges of the top I then used US Circular needles size 11 and the red yarn (doubled to get a chunky weight) and simply did a garter stitch for 4 rows.

 Teeth

Cast on 5 stitches with white yarn using US11 circular.

Row 1: K1, yo, k2tog, yo, k2
Row 2 and every even row:  Knit
Row 3: K1, *yo, k2tog* repeat twice, yo, k1
Row 5: K1, *yo, k2tog* repeat twice, yo, k2
Row 7: K1, *yo, k2tog* repeat three times, yo, k1

Row 9 : Bind off 5, 1st on right needle, yo, k2tog, yo, k1 (5 stitches left on needle)
Row 10: Knit

Start over and repeat these ten rows until you reach your desired length then bind off and weave in the ends. Mine had 12 teeth in total.

Using White yarn I simply stitched the teeth along the edge of the red at the top of the blanket.

Fins

Top fin
US 11 Circular needles - and grey yarn.
Cast on 36
Knit 2 rows
Row 3 - K1, K2tog, knit to last 3 stitches, SSK, K1
Row 4  - Knit
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until you reach the tip and bind of last stitches.
Using grey yarn attach to middle of the blanket.

Side Fins (make 2)
US 11 Circular needles - and grey yarn.
Cast on 18
Knit 2 rows
Row 3 - K1, K2tog, knit to last 3 stitches, SSK, K1
Row 4  - Knit
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until you reach the tip and bind of last stitches.
Using grey yarn attach one to each side of the blanket.

Eyes

I used black and white felt and cut out circles and just tack stitched them on. Nothing too fancy. I couldn't get a nice duplicate stitch with the kind of yarn I was using.

  2. I have found an errata in the Teeth part of the pattern. Row 9 should read "Bind off 5"....not 8.
This leaves 1st on RH needle and 3st on LH needle. You then finish off the rest of row 9 using these 3st, giving 5st to knit for row 10, and to start off with again on row 1.

  4. Kari,

About how long did it take you to knit this? I know we all knit at a different pace. I've only been knitting a year but since this is a super bulky yarn I'm thinking not too terribly long..? I'm thinking about making this for my nephew for Christmas but have a bunch of other knit gifts in the hopper and fear I may not have enough time.

Such a great pattern! Thank you for posting!!

  6. Hi, I'm enjoying knitting your shark. I have a question for you please I'm ready to join in the round, I am to k. every row, If I knit each row, won't it be the same on right side as on inside? I'm new at knitting. I hope you can understand my question. Thank you so much!

    1. Hmmm, when you were working the rows for the upper part of the blanket the first row should be knit and then the next a purl row. This will give you stockinette stitch pattern. Once you going in the round you will only need to knit rows (not any purl) to keep in the same pattern. If you were to purl a row it would end up looking like garter stitch.I hope this helps you out. I'm a picture person sometime it helps me understand it better, you can email me at provencherkl@gmail.com pictures if my answer doesn't quite help you enough.

  7. Hi there! Am I going crazy...? I just got to the last part of the decrease row for the body and it's 20 stitches not 22... I've gone through it a couple times, definitely started with 30 stitches.

My nephew is going to love this for his bday so I really appreciate you posting this. I just want it to be perfect. Thanks!

  8. Hi Kimberly, yes that is a complete mistake. You will need to end with 22 stitches in order to start work on the fin so need to decrease by 8 stitches evenly from 30-22. so if you did as follows K4, K2tog 4x ending with k2 you should have the right amount.

  10. Crazy request -- but has anybody converted this to a children's size? I would love the size for a 2-4 year old. (:

    1. Yes, I knit two of these, one for a 3 year old and one for a 2 year old. Essentially, the same for both. I decreased the body size to 20 inches or so (instead of 40 inches in the pattern), depending on the height of the child. Everything else in the pattern I followed and it turned out absolutely wonderful! The kids LOVE them!

  11. Yes, I started with 80 st and knitted in the round fm the beginning and reduced the size I knitted it.

Also teeth, I have lots of holes in mine from the yarn overs, I'm using super chunky to match the shark. Any suggestions please.

  12. I love the look of this blanket but would like to know for my two grandsons. One is 4 and the other 8. Any chance this could be written for a child?

  14. What needles do you use for the stockinette prior to using circular needle. Karen

  15. I noticed that there isn't a row 50. I want to make this for my grandson for Christmas. Has anyone had an issue with this?

  16. You do not include any Table of Abbreviations. Every knitting pattern should have a glossary of terms. For instance you use the abbreviations KFB. What does that mean?

Then, in printing the pattern, I found lots of formatting problems. Whole lines of instructions were omitted and it took several print attempts to capture the whole pattern.

Note too that most patterns now quote for needle size in millimeters, in addition to US sizes.
